Chapter 8
Later, as the two of them sat on Michallynnâs sofa, she began to feel the strength coming back into her. Having oneâs soul kissed, so it turned out, sucked out much of oneâs life force.
They sat on opposite ends of the sofa, facing each other. She leaned back against the arm with Augustusâs arms wrapped around her calves. They hadnât said more than a few words to each other. She didnât know how to tell him how she felt or to ask him if he knew what was going on.
âWill he be ok?â she asked, suddenly, unable to bear the silence any longer.
âAustin? Yes, heâll be fine.â
âWhat happened to him?â
He seemed to consider before answering. Then he stated the obvious. âHe was attacked.â
She frowned at him, incredulously. âApparently.â
âHopefully he can tell us who did it.â
âWhat happened to him when you were with him?â she persisted.
He rubbed his hand along her calf. If she hadnât been so intent, she would have been distracted. As it was, she merely kept her attention on him, waiting for an answer.
âHe was healed.â
That, too, was obvious. She struggled, however, with wanting to know the details and not wanting to know the details.
âGo on,â she said, softly, unable to resist. Perhaps it was from years of training and subsequent years of practice, but she had to follow through.
He shrugged and looked toward the window.
âYou healed him,â she said, sliding easily into her psychologist role. She hadnât wanted to. She just couldnât help herself.
He looked back at her, surprisingly with pain in his eyes. He nodded tightly.
âIt makes you uncomfortable,â she said, fighting the urge to sit up and lean toward him.
âNo, it doesnât make me uncomfortable,â he said, with a little smile tugging at the corner of his lips. âBut itâs obviously dangerous for you.â
âOh,â she said, softly. âYouâre upset because youâre worried about me.â
âIâm not upset,â he answered quickly, then ran his hand through his hair.
She tilted her head and studied him. She knew he was upset.
She kept replaying that kiss of the soul over and over in her mind. He touched her heart. He touched her physically. Even now when she looked at him, her heart swelled with love. She had to know.
What had he done to her? Or was it some phenomenon that had occurred between them? Was this what all the hoopla was about? Had she just thought sheâd known what love was all about? If this was what it was like, she suddenly understood all the trouble people went through to for it. Why men fought wars because of it.
She had to know.
âOk,â she said, turning her eyes toward to the ceiling in an effort to find some internal strength before meeting his gaze again. âYou wonât tell me what happened to Austin. Can you tell me what happened to me?â Her words came out in a rush at the end. She needed to know.
She was afraid to know. She was afraid that it was all in her imagination. That
