Chapter 8

Later, as the two of them sat on Michallynn’s sofa, she began to feel the strength coming back into her. Having one’s soul kissed, so it turned out, sucked out much of one’s life force.

They sat on opposite ends of the sofa, facing each other. She leaned back against the arm with Augustus’s arms wrapped around her calves. They hadn’t said more than a few words to each other. She didn’t know how to tell him how she felt or to ask him if he knew what was going on.

“Will he be ok?” she asked, suddenly, unable to bear the silence any longer.

“Austin? Yes, he’ll be fine.”

“What happened to him?”

He seemed to consider before answering. Then he stated the obvious. “He was attacked.”

She frowned at him, incredulously. “Apparently.”

“Hopefully he can tell us who did it.”

“What happened to him when you were with him?” she persisted.

He rubbed his hand along her calf. If she hadn’t been so intent, she would have been distracted. As it was, she merely kept her attention on him, waiting for an answer.

“He was healed.”

That, too, was obvious. She struggled, however, with wanting to know the details and not wanting to know the details.

“Go on,” she said, softly, unable to resist. Perhaps it was from years of training and subsequent years of practice, but she had to follow through.

He shrugged and looked toward the window.

“You healed him,” she said, sliding easily into her psychologist role. She hadn’t wanted to. She just couldn’t help herself.

He looked back at her, surprisingly with pain in his eyes. He nodded tightly.

“It makes you uncomfortable,” she said, fighting the urge to sit up and lean toward him.

“No, it doesn’t make me uncomfortable,” he said, with a little smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “But it’s obviously dangerous for you.”

“Oh,” she said, softly. “You’re upset because you’re worried about me.”

“I’m not upset,” he answered quickly, then ran his hand through his hair.

She tilted her head and studied him. She knew he was upset.

She kept replaying that kiss of the soul over and over in her mind. He touched her heart. He touched her physically. Even now when she looked at him, her heart swelled with love. She had to know.

What had he done to her? Or was it some phenomenon that had occurred between them? Was this what all the hoopla was about? Had she just thought she’d known what love was all about? If this was what it was like, she suddenly understood all the trouble people went through to for it. Why men fought wars because of it.

She had to know.

“Ok,” she said, turning her eyes toward to the ceiling in an effort to find some internal strength before meeting his gaze again. “You won’t tell me what happened to Austin. Can you tell me what happened to me?” Her words came out in a rush at the end. She needed to know.

She was afraid to know. She was afraid that it was all in her imagination. That
